Packing & Moving
Don’t wait to discuss moving until your house is under contract. Moving personal items and furniture normally starts as soon as you’re getting the house ready for sell. When you declutter, you may find it’s easier to pack up many items from closets that you won’t need right away such as off season clothes, personal pictures, keepsakes, special occasion dinnerware, and much more. This will greatly reduce you packing load later and makes your closets look larger. As you will also find getting rid of “things” you can donate, yard sale or there are many sites where you can sell them. This declutter process is surprisingly therapeutic.
Are you packing yourself or hiring a company? Are you moving yourself or bringing in some pros? Are you moving some or all to a storage unit or to a new place? Getting a POD? Consider not only the cost to move, but other factors like time and proper equipment. Though professional movers may seem pricey at first, when you look at the time and money to get similar results, you may re-consider. Be sure to get moving estimates in writing and compare several companies. Ask for discounts and be sure to only use licensed, bonded movers. Also make a checklist so that you’re organized and efficient, especially naming the boxes and coding them (color, # or name) with a room at the new place with the same code.
